The Generative AI in Teaching Institute (GAIT) is a semester-long faculty development experience designed to help instructors thoughtfully integrate generative AI into teaching and learning. Through a combination of self-paced learning, collaborative discussions, peer feedback, and hands-on application, participants explore both the opportunities and challenges of AI in higher education.  

GAIT emphasizes a balanced, research-informed approach to teaching with and around AI, all anchored in evidence-based based instructional best practices, empowering faculty to make informed decisions about how AI fits into their courses, disciplines, and teaching philosophies.

Participants can customize their learning experience by selecting topics most relevant to their goals. Learning modules include:

Program Structure

GAIT is designed as a semester-long experience that balances flexibility with meaningful engagement and community. Over the course of the semester, GAITers will: 

  • Complete 4 of 8 available learning modules 
  • Pass brief module knowledge checks 
  • Participate in online cohort meetings including an orientation meeting, 3 design studio sessions, and a final showcase 
  • Build practical teaching artifacts 
  • Participate in peer feedback activities 
  • Engage in reflection 
  • Showcase their learning and creations in a final portfolio

Who Should Apply?

GAIT is open to all faculty (including adjuncts) who are interested in exploring the implications of generative AI for teaching and learning, regardless of prior experience with AI tools. Whether you are just getting started or already experimenting with AI in your courses, the institute provides flexible opportunities to deepen your knowledge, develop practical resources, and learn alongside colleagues.
